The “Youth4Action” Debate club

The “Youth4Action” Debate club was founded in January 2019. The general topic is Democracy, Citizenship, Security, European integration and Diversity with special focus on the role and opportunities for young people in EU.
This non-formal activity develops competences of critical thinking, grace under pressure and confident comunication for the students involved. It’s a good opportunity to be better informed about EU policy, EU institutions, state member activities, leaders and other global affairs.

 

Student debaters have several advantages:
  • Debating provides practice in developing sound and logical arguments.
  • Debate gives students an opportunity to practice speaking in front of an audience and thinking on their feet.
  • Students participating in debate show initiative and leadership.
  • The research debaters perform expands their minds and increases their understanding of multiple sides of important issues.
  • Students hone their research skills in preparing for debates.

Debate skills can come in handy when interviewing for university, for jobs, networking for career advancement, conducting meetings, and giving presentations. These "soft skills" can help in most careers because debate students learn the art of persuasion.

It is the VISION of the “Youth4Action” Debate club:

...to provide debate programs to foster students creative skills, competences of critical thinking, grace under pressure and confident comunication.

It is the MISSION of the “Youth4Action” Debate club:

...to present public debates and host debate competitions on topics from European studies and international relations;

...to offer debate activities which improve critical thinking, research skills, argumentation, advocacy, persuasion, oral presentation, listening, organization, teamworkand leadership;

...to offer students from pre-university environment the opportunty to familiarize themselves with important topics onthe European Union, raise certain issues to obtain answers from the academia and public institutions, or policy makers.

 

First edition of the Debate club “Youth4Action” , topic „The younger generation does not care about EU policy”

The first edition of the debate club reunited 3 teams of students (12 students) from three universities:
  • - Lucian Blaga University from Sibiu,
  • - Free International University of Moldova, Chişinău,
  • - Babeş-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca.
They all came with other colleagues to support and encourage them. We also enjoyed the presence of some students from Cluj-Napoca schools andd their professors, who came to familiarize themselves with important topics on the European Union, to raise questions and find out more about this type of debates.

For two hours, the debate teams debated intensely, with solid arguments and well-constructed lines, a general idea often circulated about young EU citizens political involvement.

The idea of the involvement that young people have towards the policies promoted at European level was the topic of discussion. The three teams argued for and against, competed in rhetoric and creativity and gave birth to a real academic discussion.Empowerment of young people mens encouraging them to take charge of their own lives and to build their future.

All the teams were declared winners because, in one form or another, they all showed interest in the EU, and that is what we consider a real success.

The moderator of this activity was Asist. Raluca Luţai, PhD, from Babeş-Bolyai University.
The team from Free International University of Moldova, Chişinău consisted of:
Irina Odobescu - BA student at the Faculty of International Relations, Political Science and Journalism (ULIM, Chisinau). She holds several diplomas obtained for academic success and civic activism. She participates in various training courses and is actively involved in various volunteer activities.
Vlada Cerneavschi - third-year BA student, specializing in International Relations (ULIM, Chisinau). During the academic year 2018-2019 she was a beneficiary of an Erasmus + mobilization scholarship. She spent a semester at the "Andrei Șaguna" University of Constanța, Romania. She is involved in various volunteer activities.
Filip Cojocaru - BA student, specializing in International Relations (ULIM, Chisinau). In the second year of his studies he was in an Erasmus + academic mobility, for a semester, at the Polytechnic University of Hauts-de-France (Valenciennes).
Ion Gavgaş - student (first year) in the Master's program in Diplomacy, Security, Business and Communication at ULIM, Chisinau. During his undergraduate studies he was in academic mobility, within the Erasmus + program, at the Catholic University of Lublin, Poland.
The team from Lucian Blaga University from Sibiu consisted of:
Michelle Opriș - second year student at the "Lucian Blaga" University of Sibiu, specializing in "International Relations and European Studies". Her interest in this field was largely due to the fact that, although she has Romanian roots,she lived in Germany until last year and had the opportunity to see different perspectives of society.
Andreea Adam - student at the "Lucian Blaga" University of Sibiu, specializing in "Security Studies". The desire to learn as much as possible guided her in this choice, along with the pleasure of analyzing, debating and finding solutions to current problems of society.
Hârcă Ana Maria - BA student at the “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu, specializing in International Relations and European Studies. She is an optimistic, persevering and open person, active and willing to help others whenever needed. She enjoys reading and volunteering.
Bencze Alondra - from Brașov, student at Lucian Blaga University in Sibiu, specializing in International Relations and European Studies. She is passionate about history, dance, loves English and loves to travel. She is an ambitious, determined and perfectionist person.
The team from Babeş-Bolyai University, Cluj-Napoca consisted of:
Marisia Toma - BA student at the Faculty of History and Philosophy, specialization Security Studies, graduation year, English taught degree. She is passionate about Political Science, especially topics of current interest such as the evolution of information in economic security and European Union’s policies, subjects of major importance in today’s academic and political field. She likes to learn and discover new things. During her years of study, she developed a strong personality along with good communication skills which facilitate her ability to cooperate with other people in achieving her goals. She is confident in her ability to face new challenges.
Iustian Leșinschi - BA student at the Faculty of History and Philosophy, specialization Security Studies. He believs that the most important quality of a man is empathy. That is why he is always involved in projects aimed at developing society and civic spirit. He also believes that a true leader is the one who inspires and motivates others through his ideas. He considers that he is a good mediator, with great communication and negotiation skills. He sets high standards and always trys to expand his resources and opportunities. The values that governs his existence are justice, tolerance and impartiality. He is a strong promoter of human dignity, and this defines his efforts in the work undertaken so far. He believes in cooperation, but he is nevertheless a strong competitor. His passions are debate-type activities, where he can best use his persuasion skills, but also the knowledge gained through years of study.
Andrei Mareș - studying Security Studies at Faculty of History and Philisophy, Babeș Bolyai University. Having attended various academic conferences and many on-stage debates, the fear of speaking in front of an audience is no more a threat. He believes that the best solutions are given inside a team.
Șamșudean Dragoș-Ioan - MA student at Babes-Bolyai University, Faculty of History and Philosophy, speciality "Leadership and communication in international organizations" and at Faculty of Orthotdox Theology, speciality "History and Geopolitics of Religion". He is intersted in the evolution of religion and religious actors in the sphere of international relations after the fall of USSR. He is following the words of Samuel P. Huntington from The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order: "In the post-Cold War world flags count and so do other symbols of cultural identity, including crosses, crescents, and even head coverings, because culture counts, and cultural identity is what is most meaningful to most people.”

Highlights, first edition of the Debate Club

The second edition of the Debate club “Youth4Action”, topic was „The effects of the SARS-Cov-2 pandemic on education, politics, economy and security” and it reunited 4 teams of students (13 students) coming from four universities and more than 30 participants:

  • - „Aurel Vlaicu”University from Arad,
  • - Free International University of Moldova, Chişinău,
  • - „Lucian Blaga” University from Sibiu,
  • - „Babeş-Bolyai” University, Cluj-Napoca.
The event brought together over 40 participants, colleagues of the debating teams, students from Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu and Cugir schools, professors, representatives of educational institutions and members of the civil society. The participants had the opportunity to raise questions and find out more about the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on education, politics, economy and security.

For three hours, the teams presented their ideas, debated intensely, and answered the questions in front of the audience, with solid arguments and well-constructed lines. The COVID-19 pandemic has created the largest disruption of education systems in history, the socio-economy sectors and public health systems are facing major challenges, international relations and national political systems are affected by self-isolation, the suspensions of legislative activities or rescheduling of elections due to fears of spreading the virus.

All the teams were declared winners because they all showed interest in the COVID-19 pandemic crisis and that is what we consider a real success.

Malvina Lelic is a BA student (3rd year) in International Relations at ULIM Chișinău. During her BA studies she took part in various volunteering projects. She was an exchange student in China for one semester.

The team from „Lucian Blaga”University, Sibiu consisted of:
Cucovici Ana is a student of the faculty of Socio-Human Science, at the specialization of Political Science. She is passionate about music, books, philosophy, and aims to become a political analyst. She participated at the ULBS Student Conference and she has been volunteering since the age of 16.
Dumitru Dumitrașcu - passionate to know more and to discover new and interesting things in security studies. A person who likes to surpass himself. Dynamic and always eager to learn and discover new things, benefiting from the advantage of previous experiences.
Oana-Elena Neacșu- first year student in Master’s program Security and International Relations at “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu. Good communication skills, open to new challenges, she likes to read and travel. She loves debates about on main problems in the world and finding possible solutions to them. She considers that what she studies defines her and that she made the best decision by chosing this domain.
Teodor Mariu, second-year student of the Socio-Human Sciences Faculty, specialising in International Relations and European Studies at "Lucian Blaga" Univeristy of Sibiu. He is an ambitious person, motivated and interested in politics and history as a whole.
