Interdisciplinary Research Workshop (online on Zoom)
Central and Eastern Europe in Post-Communism: Understanding the Political, Social and Historical Developments
25-26 November 2020
Organized by the Institute of Central European Studies, Babeș-Bolyai University Cluj

The regime change in Central and Eastern Europe (1989-1990) brought a series of challenges and developments in the region. Three decades of post-communism indicate a very high dynamic in political, economic, social and historical terms. In many countries the transition to democracy was difficult, the role of civil society changed over time, the conventional and contentious politics went in different directions, the economic hardships occurred more often than anticipated, and the social problems took various forms. In addition to these general trends, specific issues such as corruption, migration, border security, poverty, or the EU and NATO accession make the entire picture complex. Extensive research made an attempt to explain the post-communist developments. This workshop aims to contribute to the existing knowledge by looking at causes, functioning or consequences of both general and specific issues.

Along these lines, this workshop seeks to bring together researchers discussing political, social, economic and historical developments in Central and Eastern Europe either with emphasis on single-case studies or in a comparative perspective. The workshop will provide the space for an academic debate in which scholars can present the most recent findings of their research. The event will be interdisciplinary and addresses scholars from Economics, History, European Studies, Migration Studies, Political Science and Sociology. A variety of perspectives and approaches will be encouraged.

The workshop will be fully online. It will have a small number of participants (15-17 papers) with focus on research feedback and discussions. Depending on the homogeneity of the papers, a special issue in an international peer-reviewed journal or an edited book with an international publisher may be feasible. There is no participation fee.

Application: Please fill in the application form and send it to the organizers until 25 October 2020.
